Happy New Year to everyone!!! I've started out my new year with a bang!!! I've closed the shop from Christmas to New Year's every year since starting the business 12 years ago. Normally I travel with my hubby to wherever he's working and spend a week relaxing. This year I decided to stay home and "weed out" the basement and get some control over the mess. What a week I had! Everything is organized and in its place, for now anyway. It feels so good and now I can focus on stitching and knitting!!!

This first photo is out of sequence, however it's so cute it deserves "1st Place"!!! I knitted "Hello Kitty" hats for my darling granddaughters, Zoe (left) and Chloe (right). The girls looked so cute in them however, Zoe has plenty of room for growth!!! Very nice Christmas, note the 46 degrees on our clock!!!

Back to the knitting! Made Zoe a cute little "jester" hat with matching pink mittens. It's a funny little hat! I missed fixing the red eyes, darn. Her extremely blue eyes are spectacular!!!

Made Chloe a little "french girl" tam. Thought her dark curls would be so cute peeking out from under!!!

Also made Chloe a little apron so she could help her "Pretty Mama" out in the kitchen.

I had so much fun knitting Bill and I some stockings this year. I think it only took a week each to knit. I really love them!

Back to stitching! I've been making Bill an ornament with some kind of deer in it for several years now. This year was a Prairie Schooler design. They are always fun and quick to stitch.

Next are the ornaments I made for Chloe and Zoe. I decided that their Christmas ornaments would be what they were dressed as on Halloween the previous year. So, Chloe was a pink princess and Zoe was a mermaid.

"Pikes Peak" Santa was made for son Harrison and his wife Jamie. He proposed to her on top of Pikes Peak! "Poland" Nutcracker was made for son Morgan and his wife Kate. I've made several other countries for them.

I also stitched 2 ornaments over my "break" and am working on a couple new designs for 2012. Now is a good time to continue working on some Christmas to get a jump on the next holiday season. With the sale we're having now is a great time to pick up some new projects to work on in the coming months. TWO (2) NEW FALL DESIGNS!!!

Just picked up patterns from the printer last evening for 2 "NEW" designs by The Sunflower Seed. The first one is a cute little bat stealing "corn" from your Halloween "goody" bag!!! He's cute, but a little ornery, clutching some candy corn in his creepy little talons!!!

"Acorn Autumn" is an earthy vine filled with lots of acorns! I love Autumn! When my boys were little we used to gather acorns by the bag full!!! They're so cute!

Been doing some cleaning around the shop lately and have decided to put ALL our Needlepunch patterns on sale at 50% off. They're already starting to go fast so get in here before they're all gone!!!!!

With your "mad" Christmas stitching ahead, I thought I would mention that we carry "Daylight" and "Craftlite" lamps and magnifying lamps. I have the "Dublin" (floor and/or table model) the "Dorset" (table model) and the "Compact" (table model) in stock at the moment. The Dorset and Compact are both great little lamps to take on stitching retreats or move around the house. The Dublin is light weight enough to do that also. The "clean" light that they put out is amazing to stitch by. Come on in and check them out. You may just need a Christmas gift for yourself!!!

Another great item you may want to get is a "stitching stool". These are great to use when stitching for long periods of time. They elevate your legs just enough to take pressure off your upper legs and back. I use mine for sure at retreats and also at home. We have a few in stock now but can order more anytime.

Market was this past week end and we're getting in lots of new Fall, Halloween and Christmas patterns almost daily. Be sure to drop in often as there's ALWAYS something new on our shelves.

"ORNAMENT FINISH CLASS" Plus sneak-peak at the new Christmas Ornament Issue!!!

I just got an e-mail this morning with images of the NEW "2011 Just Cross Stitch Christmas Ornament" Issue!!! If you haven't seen it somewhere else already, here it is! As always we have a sign up sheet in the shop so we'll know just how many we will need to be ordering. Come by, sign up and pre-pay ($7.99) and we'll get one ordered in for you!
Okay, Karen!!!, here it is!!! I will be having an ornament finishing class on 2 dates very soon! Check your calendars for Saturday, August 27~3:00 p.m. to however long it takes and Monday, August 29~7:00 p.m. to, whenever. I can't imagine it will take much more than an hour. Bring paper and pen to take notes. Cost of the class will be $5.00. What a deal!!! I will take you through the steps to create the lovely flat ornaments that you have been seeing popping up on our shop Christmas tree! They really are fun to do and pack away so nicely that they should look the same year after year when you decorate your tree. However, if you attach bows like these 2 being shown, you will have to protect the bows when storing. (or make new ones if they get squashed!)

"A Schoolgirl's Work" from Barb Adams and Alma Allen of Blackbird Designs is 104 pages and suggested retail is $26.95. Looks VERY interesting to us! Can't wait to see it!

Just Cross Stitch "Halloween Collection" is 100 pages with 50-some designs from many of your favorite designers. We're SO excited with OUR favorite designer, "The Sunflower Seed", being featured on the cover of this soft bound book!!! This book will run $16.95. Again, pre-payment is required. IN THE GOOD OLE' SUMMER TIME.....

It's a great time to get out some of those stitched pieces and get them framed up and ready for Christmas gifts! I know you've got a bunch of them in a drawer somewhere, so get em out, bring em in and we'll get you some great frames from East Side Mouldings! You can stretch them youself or we can do it here at the shop. We'll run a little "Christmas in July sale...only in June though!!! The deal is; 15% off your frame purchase through June 30. The stretching fee (which is pretty minor) is extra. Below are a few examples of what I'll be framing this week. As you can see we have quite a few very nice primitive type mouldings available. A large variety of colors, widths and textures.

The "Primitive Pearls" and " Folke Faire" seem to be the most popular right now with many of our customers. The "French Farms" are gaining popularity too with their rosettes in the corners! I'll be using one of these on my NEW design "America" which will be coming out soon.

Below are the narrower mouldings available in many colors and either flat and painted solid, rubbed edges or grooved.

Dig those finished projects out, get em in here and some of your Christmas gift giving will be finished up before you know it and at a great savings!!!

Nashville Market was held this past week end, and this was my first time not attending in 11 years! It was a bittersweet decision to make. Reina and I have such a great time going and we missed seeing everyone and everything. It just felt like I needed to take a "breather" this year, lower my stress levels and just plain "relax"!!!

JEEPERS ~~~ WHERE DOES THE TIME GO!!!!

I could have sworn that I did a December blog ~~~guess not!! Lots to show and lots to do so I'll just get on with it!!! Grab a cup of tea, glass of wine or whatever, this is a little on the long side!

First of all, I want to introduce you to the most lovable little 3 year old Beagle you have ever seen!!! Her name is Daisy and I adopted her from my son Harrison and his wife Jamie. With 6 month old Zoe, life at their house was just getting too crazy! I had her at home during my week off to see how we got along and she settled in perfectly. She's doing great at the shop and welcomes all the petting a person can give her!!! She and Betsy nap under my desk together so things are working out well.

Betsy is 14 years old now and the cold, cold winter we are having just screamed for her to have a new coat. She seems to like it very much so sometimes we just leave it on all day!!!

January brings on the "cleaning frenzy" as I call it, so, as soon as I got back to work I "dug" in. No more cob webs and lots of new displays. You're greeted at the door with our "January Snowman Display". Lots of fun little guys to stitch away these cold days and nights.

Sue came in the other day with 2 amazing projects that she's been working on!!! OMG - this Prairie Schooler ABC design is SOOOOO AMAZING you just can't imagine how gorgeous it is turning out!!! She is stitching all these charts together on 25 ct. fabric ~ over 1 ~ !!! It is sooooo beautiful!!! I WANT ONE!!! She said she was doing 2 designs each month and so far it was going well and very do-able. Look how proud she is, and very well should be!

Fall ~ It's The Most Wonderful Time of The Year!!!

In my book anyway!!! I got in the car early this morning and drove through the neighborhood enjoying some of the wonderful color that fall has to offer. The streets were still quiet so I could stop anytime I wanted and shoot through the windows! Sadly, some of the trees are bare already but there's still a lot of beauty to be seen. I hope you'll enjoy some of God's greatest work!

I've recently released a couple new designs. "Igor McScott" was so fun to design and pretty quick to stitch. If you hurry you could get it done in time for Halloween!!! There is a story behind "Igor"; he's actually REAL. This little bat has lived under the backdoor eave of the Scott's home for several years. so they decided to give the little guy a name. He's no trouble at all and probably eats his weight in mosquito's and other unwanted bugs in their yard many times over. He's greeted daily by the family and the dogs don't mind his presence!!! "Hang" in there Igor, for many years to come!!!

"Warm Christmas Wishes" is another quick stitch so you can have it ready for your Christmas decorating. It was stitched using The Gentle Arts "Simply Wool" fiber which stitches like a dream! You may use the same-named cotton threads if you prefer but you should at least try the wools. They're awesome. This is a great design to try them out since there are just a few colors required.

"Warm Christmas Wishes"

"Floral Scissor Keeper" was released early in the month. The chart includes both the front and back designs along with an upper case alphabet to personalize your very own scissor keeper. A very quick stitch and use some of your own antique buttons to embellish. I rushed (not sure of the correct spelling of this technique!)some pretty ribbon and stitched it on all around the edge then added a ribbon bow for some extra "fu-fu"!!! Finishing instructions and shape pattern are also included.

I have to take breaks after doing some designing so I stitch up some little pieces by other designers. I knew I had to stitch the "NEW" Blackbird "Waiting for the Harvest". I did change the color of both floss and linen. I used R&R "Witches Brew" and Gentle Arts "Wrought Iron". I'm stitching some other little Halloween items using these colors and wanted them all to coordinate. This photo depicts the fabric as beige but it is actually rather orange! How does this happen!!!

Below is a little piece I stitched last night. I needed a really quick project to get that "finally finished something" feeling!!! Again I used "Witches Brew" linen; still too light in the photo! This design is by Blue Ribbon Designs, "Afraid of the Dark". This chart has several "littles" pieces to make a pinkeep, scissor fob, needlebook and floss ring tag. I want to do them all but this will have to do for now!!! Love the bat designs these days!!!

Some evenings my eyes are just too tired to cross stitch so that's when I pick up a knitting project. I recently purchased this yummy yarn at "The Yarn Barn" in Lawrence. I've shopped there for years (since the mid 70's) and thoroughly enjoy each and every visit I make there!!! This yarn is a sport weight of 100% Alpaca Wool so it's sooooooo soft. Alpaca has become my favorite wool for items that wrap around my neck. No scratchy feeling! I hate scratchy!!! I chose a "Fern" pattern from my very old book of pattern designs. I used a size 9 needle so that it was a bit more airy and less dense. I like how it's coming out! I decided to make several narrow scarves to "liven" up a rather plain top for the winter. They will not only "jazz" up the wardrobe but also keep my neck warmer without much weight.

Finished off the 2 Blackbird designs from a previous post. However, I didn't get a photo taken of the red version. Maybe next time!!! I sewed this together using some felted wool for the backing. Filled it with "lizard litter" for a really nice "squishy" feel! I then used a picot shell stitch to crochet around the edge adding a button in the picot as I went along. Turned out really cute! This "dresser pillow" was made for my aunt so hopefully I will get out to see her one of these days soon to deliver it!

I can't believe how much time it takes to do these blogs!!! Time just flies by. No wonder I don't do it more often!!! I really need to get something done around the house today, or not, so I will close with some extra special fall wishes to you all. Go outside, smell some mums in your neighbors yard and take a brisk walk and enjoy what's left of those gorgeous trees!

As I look out my dining room window this is what I see in the fall. The plumes of this gorgeous grass turn amber in the fall and it truly does "wave" in the wind. I don't get to see the "waving" wheat fields of my childhood much anymore, but this does just fine for me!!! It's beautiful!

Heading Toward the Holidays!!!!!

Another month has come and gone! I can't say that I hate to see summer ending! We've been WAY too hot here and I'm ready to welcome some cooler weather and get some added stitching energy rolling. Today was rather exciting as our ever smiling, "Cutie-Pie UPS Guy" brought us a heavy, heavy box! Was trying to remember what I might have ordered that was so heavy but as I slit the tape on the box and saw it was magazines I almost squeeled with joy!!! IT'S HERE, IT'S HERE !!! ~~ the 2010 Just Cross Stitch Christmas Ornament Edition!!! For those of you that signed up at the shop to reserve a copy, rush right in, pick your copy up and get busy planning those ornament gifts for the holidays!!! There's some REALLY great designs in here, you won't want to miss this issue!!! We have extras too so don't worry if you hadn't reserved a copy. "The Sunflower Seed" design is photographed on page 40. This is the second of a "new" series of ornaments for this magazine!!! Look closely at the beaded outer trim. I have to say it's pretty awesome!!! You'll have to come in to see the actual ornament when it is returned to us, probably very soon!

Okay, I think I've calmed down enough to go on now!!! I've recently released a few designs to the distributors and they're now available through the shop. My 2 daughter-in-laws were the inspiration for "Mothers Are". Seeing these 2 young mothers with their adorable little daughters, assures me that they truly will be the "Sunshine" their daughters will need to grow into bright, happy, children!!!

With Fall right around the corner comes, Thanksgiving . "A Harvest of Blessings" was very fun to design! I LOVE fall and everything about it. The earthy colors, the sounds and smells; everything! With this design you can almost feel the sunshine warming a cool breeze and hear the crickets croaking in the corn fields. Fresh pumpkins, squash and apples are spread on the table for the upcoming feast. You know these will be made into pies, casseroles and spicy apple butter to be lavishly spread upon fresh cornbread.........OH MY!!!...what could be better!!! These foods absolutely warm the soul! I hope you will enjoy this design as much as I did creating it!

"Sunflower Snow Woman" makes her debut as a companion to last seasons "Sunflower Santa"! She's one "spiffy" little gal decked out in her warm sunflower-adorned hat and matching jacket! She looks pretty warm and extremely happy in her little sunflower heaven!!!

"Deck the Halls" is quite festive! You can almost hear some "waltzy" kind of music playing as these young ladies and lads are decorating their parlor trees for the holidays. Some pointsettias and snowflakes add to the ambiance of the season. There's nothing more beautiful than snowflakes on Christmas Eve!!!

Here's a couple of pieces I've stitched lately. The blue version was made for my extremely amazing "Aunt Rena's" birthday. This woman taught me so much, needlework, cooking, and some valuable life lessons. She's truly the most amazing woman I've ever known. She is absolutely THE BEST!!! Happy Birthday E ~ Erina, L ~ Lorenzi, R ~ Ryan! This Blackbird design stitched up so quickly and I loved it so much that I immediately started one for myself, in red; Cranberry Belle Soie, yum!!! I love them both! The blue version is Thread Gatherer Finnigan's Fog.

OHHHHHH MAN!!!!.................. I just lost the photo with the totally finished gift for my Aunt. I guess I will just have to show it on the next post. Maybe by then I will also have mine "finished". I just HATE when that happens!

Marcia stitched this beautiful La D Da design, "Bless This House". She stitched this on 40 Ct. linen and it's stunning! She stitches lots of 40 Ct. and is a pro at it!!! This photo (as most photos don't) does not do this piece justice. It's in a dark green frame and it's a luscious finished piece.

Last but not least is a little reminder that our Christmas stitching better be in the "works" by now!!! This little Santa is by Bent Creek. Kathy stitched it for a shop model on 7 ct. Sand Klostern. It's a quick stitch if you're needing a little "thank you" or "house warming" gift. Add a little rustic frame and you'll be a hit at the next Christmas dinner party!!!

Some "NEW" stuff and "UFO" update!!!

After all the excitement and distraction of welcoming our new granddaughter to the family it's been hard to get back to the realities of my business. It's a new balancing act of emotions but, I've actually made some progress recently! Hurrah!!! I've finished stitching a few small projects, framed a couple and designed, stitched and finished 3 "NEW" Kansas Ornaments. I'm feeling pretty good at the moment!!! Sometimes you just have to switch gears, do some smaller projects and actually finish them in order to continue on with those larger projects. It's a breath of fresh air!!!

"Always and Forever" by Little House Needleworks has been in my stash of projects to do but just recently called out to me! You know, there were other things that needed to be done first but "so what" !!! First I thought I would make it for Bill for Christmas but then "dah" realized that our 25th Wedding Anniversary would be 1-1-11!!! How cool is that????? So, I went to my studio and dug through my drawer of small fabric swatches and found this R&R 30 Ct. Apple Brown Bindy which was perfectly sized! I then went to my silk box and pulled "Finnigan's Fog" Silk 'n Colors from The Thread Gatherer and voila! it all came together. I'm going to frame it in East Side Mouldings Primitive Pearls - Black which I think has just arrived, I haven't completely unpacked a recent shipment of frames. I love how it turned out and will probably hang it in our bedroom as that's where our wedding sampler resides. This photo is a little fuzzy but when I get it framed maybe I can show a better photo. It stitched up very quickly which added to the excitement!!!

Below is "Celtic Alphabet" by The Courtney Collection that I recently finished and had framed. I again used some R&R 30 Ct. fabric (can't remember at the moment what it was) and again used some Thread Gatherer Silk 'n Colors, "Rusty Amber" that was in my silk box. Our wonderful "Frame Warehouse" did this beautiful frame job for me.

Below is "Mr. Candy Cane Man" by Homespun Elegance. I started stitching this piece when the weather was still freezing and thought I better get it finished up for the upcoming holiday season. This was very fun to stitch! I added a brass snowflake in place of the bird that the designer used. I used R&R Creek Bed Brown 30 ct. linen and used the floss colors specified by the designer. I love how it turned out!

"NOW FOR SOME "NEW" DESIGNS BY THE SUNFLOWER SEED"

This year's addition to The Sunflower Seed's "Kansas Xmas Collection" is here and ready for you to stitch!!! This year features a happy little pig rooting around in the mud with the ever present rooster perched on the fence! You can almost hear him crowing!!! There will be only one more of these designs which will make a total of a 10 year collection!!! We have a stitcher who is making these into a wall quilt and hopefully we will have it to display in the shop someday!!! She is very anxious to get the last design and I have agreed to allow her to have it soon so she can finish up her quilt this year!!! Can't wait to see it Corrina!!!

"Merry Topeka" was stitched on 30 ct. R&R Korty's Special Blend over 2 threads using 2 strands of The Gentle Art Sampler Threads; Pine, Cranberry and Gold Leaf. A very quick stitch to make for holiday gifts. I have also designed numerous other Kansas cities to fit into this design. I'll be happy to do "special requests" for you. I've already done one California city for someone! They're fun!!!

Next we have "Merry Kansas" featuring our well known agricultural commodity, wheat. I love how the wheat beards turned out. The photo is okay but you have to see it in person to really appreciate it's dimension. I stitched this design on the same fabric as the "Merry Topeka" however it's a different dye lot so it's a bit different in shade. Come on by the shop if you can and check it out. I added some organza and metallic ribbons along with a "jingle bell" for fun!

And ~~~ "The UFO Up-Date"!!! Below is the "Diminutive Dutch Sampler" from a previous post, finished and framed beautifully by our very own"Frame Warehouse" here in Topeka. They do such a beautiful job! I think I picked the perfect moulding for this piece. Right now it's in my home studio! Yummy!!!

So, I think that's enough for now. It's been fun! And, sometimes frustrating with "Blogger", but I've been patient!!! The days have been very hot and humid here in Eastern Kansas. I for one don't spend much time out side these days. It's a good time to enjoy lots of iced tea and stay inside and stitch the week end afternoons away. I can't think on anything better, well, except maybe to hug and squeeze one of my beautiful granddaughters!!!

June 29, 2010 was a most "spectacular" day for our family, the day "ZOE MARIE" made her long awaited debut!!! The family waiting room was filled with 2 sets of very anxious Grandparents, 1 Great Grandfather, 2 Great Grandmothers, an Uncle, an Aunt and a Cousin. After a long day of waiting; watching TV, knitting, reading magazines, eating lunch, taking turns in the birthing room to "check in" on the progress, my husband finally got a text that read: "Send in the Grandmas!!!!!" We grabbed our "pass" and sped down the hall choking back the tears of joy!!! What a beautiful sight!!! She was alert and looking around like, "where the heck am I now"!!! We took lots of pictures of her with "Mommy and Daddy" and got our first "hold" later that evening. It's truly amazing!!! We are so Blessed to have another healthy, beautiful little girl!

A short post this time as many of you have been asking about our new "little one". It's back to work now, designing and running the shop, vacation's over; ~~~ boo...!!! My next post should have some UFO updates and hopefully photos of some "NEW" designs that will be released very soon!!! I'm waiting on a couple frames and working on some usable photos. Sometimes that's a real challenge!

"Waiting on Zoe" !!!

It dawned on me a few weeks back that I had started this wonderful Grandmother design, "Blessings Sampler" by Wild-Heart Designs, when we were blessed with our darling granddaughter Chloe. It's about 1/2 done at this point. Now that the days are getting closer to the arrival of our second granddaughter, Zoe, I went to my studio and retrieved it from my UFO drawers, yes, drawers, and have been working on it again. I will hopefully finish it this year and will have a sweet, sweet memory of working on it while awaiting the birth of both sweet little girl cousins! The completed sampler will read, "The love and devotion I gave to my child I thought I could give to no other, But life held a lovely surprise for me the day I became a Grandmother!" Thank you Wild-Heart Designs!!! That says it all!!!

Sandy, Jamie's mom was going to stitch it but she had been helping with all the nursery items, curtains, crib canopy, painting, and decorating I thought she maybe needed a break! Since I don't live near them, this is how I can contribute. I hope Zoe will like it!!!

While rummaging through my UFO's I found this little piece that just needed the last two squares filled in. Why do I put something aside when it's nearly finished??? I do it all the time, do you??? Sometimes I think I'm loving this so much I don't want it to end. That wasn't the case with this piece though. I remember I had taken this to hockey practices (wow that WAS a long time ago!!!) and kept making mistakes on the little back stitch curly-q's on the "A". Guess this just wasn't the project for hockey!!! Annnny---whooooo, it has since been finished and I took it to the framer last week!!! TA-DAAAA!!! One down, several hundred to go!!!!

I converted the DMC to GA Sampler Threads and stitched it on some

of my own "grungy" hand dyed 28 Ct. linen.

Below is another UFO that I started about a year ago. Not much progress but that's okay. However, I better get back to it since it's being stitched on 40 Ct. linen. The eyes aren't getting any younger! These sweet little designs are by "Little House Needleworks". I'm planning on doing 6 of these "Little Women Virtues" all together on this 40 Ct. Antique Cotton Linen from R&R. I'm leaving out the little rectangles where you can put someones name in. These designs come as thread packs with Crescent Colors Belle Soie Silk threads. The designers choice of colors are so beautiful and the designs are just so adorable I couldn't resist! My placement will be "Gentle & Kind", "Soft & Sweet", "Loving & Faithful", "Strong & Beautiful", Joyful & Caring", "Always & Forever".

Below is a design by "The Scarlet Letter" that I started "several" years ago. I love it, and someday, I'll finish it. It comes out of hiding every once in a while and I stitch on it a couple evenings, then something else takes precedence. Such is life! I know plenty of you have the same issues as I, there just is not enough time in one lifetime to stitch everything we love! I will keep the faith, however, that it will get finished! I converted the fibers to Weeks Dye Works and the fabric is either 32 or 35 Ct. R&R Cappuccino Linen (I think! ~ I didn't write it down anywhere!!! ~ oops!!!)

I wanted to share this "absolutely awe inspiring" sampler that was recently completed by one of my "stitching pals". We have it on display at the shop right now so please come and see it in person!!! Photos NEVER do a piece justice. You really have got to see this one!!! Reita stitched this beauty on 28 Ct. Natural Cashel Linen using Crescent Colours "Sister Scarlet" Belle Soie Silk. The design area measures 21 3/4" x 22 3/4". She set a goal of one year to complete this project and she came in 2 weeks ahead of her deadline!!! If you happened to notice a slight "quiver" in the earths atmosphere the day of completion, never fear, it was just Reita jumping for joy and shouting a giant "TA-Dah" !!!

A Tribute to Kris

I wanted to share with you a special tribute series of charts that are in progress in the memory of Kris Stott. Kris and Dave Stott built Norden Crafts which is one of the finest distributors of needlework supplies and accessories for the cross stitch industry. "She was a wife, mother, grandmother, friend, businesswoman, artist, quilter, gardener and protector of all creatures in the animal kingdom, both large and small." This was taken from the back of the chart word for word because it describes Kris perfectly. Her daughter wanted to pay tribute in some way and asked designers to submit designs of specific dimensions, using a chosen fabric and color palette. The submissions were overwhelming, which shows just how much she was valued in this industry. So, seven charts will be published in her honor. A portion of the proceeds is being donated to various animal protection organizations in Kris's name. Also, on the back of the charts are "Remembrances of Kris" from the designers who contributed the portions of each chart.

Chart #2 is called "Lady of the House" and is, of course, my favorite since it includes my design portion!!! In my design, Kris is standing there with a heart that fills her bodice, overflowing with love for all the things she stood for. The hearts growing on the plant represent Kris and Dave and the family that blossomed, son Matt, daughter Katy and their grandchildren. The yellow flowers in the border represent, of course, Sunflowers!

Because Kris loved ALL animals so much I will close with a photo of our "Sweet Betsy". Even though she barks and growls at just about everyone that comes through the door here at the shop, once she knows you she is the sweetest "old girl" ever! She spends most of her days napping but around 4:30 every afternoon I get a little "1 hour warning". She comes to me wagging her tail and "warbling"!!! I'm sure she's telling me to get things cleaned up and put away, pack your bag and get ready to go home cause I'm gett'in hungry!!!

Exciting Times Ahead !!!

I guess it's been a couple weeks now that my BFF Reina, sister Paula and I traveled to the middle of the State to attend a baby shower for my "adorable" daughter-in-law Jamie!! I've never seen so much "PINK" or so many wonderful and beautiful baby gifts in my life!!! It was so much fun! It took a van, an SUV and a car or two to bring all the "goodies" home. Son Harrison was overwhelmed with it all!!! Guys are so funny!!! This little girl will be the best dressed baby ever!!!

Besides cross stitching, I also love to knit. I wanted to make some special things for "Zoe" that might add a little "pizzaz" to some of her ensambles!!! Below is the ultimate "Box~O~Booties"!!! I tagged them all with fiber content and washing instructions.

I found the pattern for the "Heirloom Bootie" below in one of my Interweave Knit magazines and absolutely fell in love with them. I only had one finished at the time of the shower but wanted to include it in the box anyway. They are made of 100% Cashmere.....mmmmmm, SOOOO soft!(The mate is almost done!)

Below is a little pair of variegated pink booties laced with some soft "polk-a-dot" ribbon! Jamie likes "polka-a-dots" !!! This yarn was the only acrylic yarn I used. It is, however, awfully soft.

I'm not sure that these are even wearable !!! but they were so cute I had to make these adorable "Mini Mary Jane's" anyway!!! They could just be a cute decoration if nothing else. Harrison could hang them from his rear view mirror!!! This yarn is Bamboo, Cotton and Nylon and very soft too!

Below is a matching cap and bootie set. Made of 100% Cotton yarn, very pink and also very soft. I found some really sweet floral ribbon to use for the bootie laces and made a cute little bow and flower decoration on the cap.

Last but not least, I made this little soft yellow pair of socks for "down the road" a bit. Maybe 8-12 months of age. This yarn is Bamboo, Merino Wool and Silk...awesome!!!!!

All the booties are very stretchy so hopefully they will fit for a few months. Whatever the case, I had a ball making all of them!!! What else is a "Gi-Gi" to do while waiting the arrival of a new "Granddaughter"!!!

Finally ~~~ A Spare Moment !!!

As soon as we're through with Nashville Market, preparations begin for our "Heartland Cross Stitch Shop Hop" held just a few weeks after. Therefore, not much time for blogging! Then after the Hop, I was busy knitting "little pink" things for our "soon to be granddaughter's" baby shower. More on that topic in another post!

We had a great Hop this year with the theme being "Christmas". I designed the border and the other participating shops designed the individual inner designs. Each shop then stitches the designs as they choose. We have always stitched and framed the complete sampler so we have a complete model for all to see. We also added buttons for a little extra "pazzazzz"! (You must attend the Hop and visit all the shops to get ALL the portions of the sampler. Sorry, the patterns are not available otherwise.) A great big "thanks" to ALL who attended making this event such a success!!!

"2010 Heartland Cross Stitch Shop Hop Sampler"

Below is a booklet I released just in time for the Hop. It's called "Lovely Alphabet" and contains the upper case of all letters. I had previously sold each letter individually and decided to put them all together in a book. The reception was absolutely awesome!!! When stitched on 14 or 28Ct. these designs fit into these coasters shown in the photo below. They are also very "lovely" framed! This booklet is only available through our shop at this time. They are somewhat labor intensive so not sure I will release them to my distributors yet. (Maybe after I've gotten some more rest!!!)

I have always put together a special kit for each Hop and below is the "2010 Hop Kit". It is called "Deck the Halls" with 2 little ladies decorating their tree for the holidays. The design was packaged with the pattern and fabric, tied with an organza bow and a star ornament for your own Christmas tree! We also had some frames on hand for sale. A quick, cute stitch! (Just a little hint...this design will be implemented into a larger design to be released a bit later, in time for the holidays!)

In years past I have also had "handpainted" Sunflower items available to the "Hoppers" for sale. I've had several different shapes and sizes of snippet jars and a couple of different shaped magnetic needle cases. This year I thought since the theme was "Christmas" I would paint up a bunch of glass balls, tie some "Happy Holiday's" ribbon on them and they could be filled with "snippets" if you so desired! Otherwise, just hang them on your tree empty, just as lovely!!! They made a fun hit!!!

What's Been Flying Out The Door!!!

We've really been busy here at the shop since returning from Nashville. All our market orders are out and things are getting back to normal!!! I think!!! I think we're all just about sick of winter so I'm going to start out with a new Spring design that'll be sure to lift up everyones spirits and get to thinking of new spring grass rising through the ground along with flowers, bunnies and lovely Spring colors. Just envision it in your mind and maybe it'll actually happen soon!!!

The latest edition of Hawk Run is here and it's fabulous!!! It's always wonderful to see the actual stitched models and photos can never due the piece justice. This is such a great design as you can stitch as many pieces of it as you like and make up your own sampler. Do each one individually and have 12 great pieces. I'm extra fond of this one as fall colors are my favorite. Love the "earthy" tones!

There were several alphabet samplers that caught my eye at this market. This one from La-D-Da is one of them. One color on some great hand-dyed linen. I think these caught my attention partly because 2 year old Chloe has learned to recognize all letters of the alphabet now and was thinking how fun to stitch her an alphabet of her own!!!

"2010" Nashville Needlework Market Releases !!!

This year market was held in a MUCH newer Embassy Suites which was an astounding pleasure to be in! The rooms were larger, the walk ways were larger, and best of all I did not detect any mold growing in every nook and cranny. That was just the worst! Below are some photos of our room display along with a few decorations that we added.

This is a banner that I made using Weeks Dye Works hand dyed wools. We intended to hang it out over the railing but their planter boxes were much too large so we hung it inside our room. We got lots of great comments about it!!!

And, of course, we always display our State Flag somewhere in the room. It covers a TV that was never turned on!!!

We had a great "Nashville" reception with our 7, yes 7, new releases at the recent TNNA Needlework Market!!!!! It's very heartwarming to see the reactions to my designs from shopowners from all over the world. There seems to be more and more European shopowners making the long trip to purchase designs and supplies from all the vendors. It's difficult at times as some don't speak English (most do however) but they KNOW what they like and want which makes us all alike in that respect. Needleworkers are needleworkers no matter where we all come from. You can't get any better than that! Below are my 7 NEW designs:

Reina and I left early Friday morning and arrived without a single glitch thanks to Darin's "tom-tom" that we borrowed. There were several hilarious incidents when that "hidden voice" came out of nowhere and nearly ejected me from the car!!! We also found it funny that "She" does not like it when we need to take a "potty" break!!! We gave her a name but I probably should not reveal it at this time!!! She did deliver us to our "final destination" safely (which we are eternally grateful!!!) and we unloaded our vehicle to very nice 45-50ish degree weather. The roads were all clear and dry once we were east of KC and a little damp when we left Nashville but clear all the way home. Thankfully we missed the storm that hit Topeka again over that weekend.

All in all we had a great time and hope you enjoy seeing what we displayed in our exhibit. I'll post again soon with some of the goodies that we brought back for you all to purchase! Drop by the shop and pick up some of your favorite designs and supplies soon. Things are flying out the door. BUSY TIMES AROUND HERE !!!

I know, I know ..... it's been a long time since my last post. January is ALWAYS my busy, busy time. This will be short as I'm wrapping up all the loose ends in preparation for the:

"2010 Nashville Needlework Market"

Reina and I will leave EARLY this coming Friday morning for a few days of very fast paced work. I've had a "glitch" with my "printer dude" and with getting one piece back from the framer in time for photography. Yikes, I don't like to run that close to deadlines! I've set up our display at the shop for a working preview and have most of the patterns packed. Wednesday and Thursday will be the final pack-up. We've got it pretty much down to a tee after exhibiting for as many years as we have. Hopefully the weather will cooperate for us. It's just been such a crazy winter and guess what, it's snowing AGAIN this afternoon!!! UGH!

We'll have LOTS of "NEW" stuff for you to see when we get back to the shop on Tuesday. I know I'll still be unpacking things. Kathy will be taking care of things at the shop while we're gone so we'll still be "OPEN" and in very competent hands. Kathy has also agreed to care for "Betsy" while I'm away. Betsy LOVES her "sleep-overs" with Aunt Kathy and Uncle Morris!!! I think Muffin just tollerates her though!!!

"Happy New Year"

Snow, snow, snow!!! It's been quite a few years since we've gotten this much snow and such cold temperatures! My body definitely picked the right year for "the change"!!! I'm very thankful for my higher body temperatures at this point in my life, especially since the temperature was 2 degrees with a -15 windchill when I got up this morning!!! We have to look for the good in everything right???!!! The fireplace is blazing and Betsy and I are toasty for now!

The photo above is of our front porch taken on Christmas Morning. Two steps "up" but they are not visible! BRRRRR!!!! We still have not been able to get with our boys and families for "Christmas". My husband barely made it home before the storm hit. With a "little one" in one family and a "baby on-board" with the other family it wasn't worth the risk. Bill and I enjoyed our fireplace and some quality time together however! We'll all get together as soon as we can but for now safety is priority!

Above are some ornaments that I made for my boys, husband and grandaughter. Maybe I shouldn't be showing them since "they" haven't even seen them yet!!! Oh well!!! The hockey ornament is for youngest son Harrison. He played hockey for many years and I've been making this ornament yearly, changing the jersey color for each team he played on. Oldest son, Morgan loved nutcrackers as a youngster so he gets a different "Country" nutcracker. This year was Ireland! Granddaughter Chloe was a Koala Bear for her first Halloween so I found this darling Koala to make for her ornament. I stitched it on silver perforated paper and added a few beads on the hat to add a little more sparkle! The Prairie Schooler deer design is for my husband. I've been making deer ornaments for him the last few years because he and Harrison go deer hunting together. They were all very fun to make and I'm always anxious to start the "next years" ornaments!!!

Here we have a great little gift from my wonderful friend Reina! Our beloved Scottish Terrier "Watson" was a part of our lives for 14 years. He grew up along with our boys and was just the "most fun" dog ever!!! What a personality he had! Reina picked this design out of the 2009 Just Cross Stitch Ornament Issue because she knew I would absolutely LOVE it and I do!!! Watson really loved the snow and would stay out until his skirt and beard were frozen!!! Thanks Reina, I will love it forever!!!

I have another "spectacular" friend, Kathy, who made me this beautiful piece! It's perfect in so many ways!!! I absolutely love the "extreme" tails and wings on these crows and it has "SUNFLOWERS". How could she go wrong with this one?! The design is an older one by Workbasket called "Crow Flowers" . Love it, love it, love it. Thanks so much Kathy!

This is the peice I mentioned in a previous post. I really love this little design, "Joy to the World" by Heartstrings Primitives". It stitched up pretty quickly and I really enjoyed stitching it. A very nice Christmas decoration addition!

I stitched this Workbasket design over one and made it into a little ornament. It was very fun to stitch and I think it turned out pretty cute!

These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things!

We're all counting down the days we have left before family and friends arrive! Wow, it won't be long now! I had a very busy day today and thought I would show you just a tiny glimpse of some of my favorite things!!!

Everyone, I'm sure, knows the "Hippopotamus Song"!!! A few years ago I came home singing this song just about every night since our local radio station seemed to be playing it constantly!!! I really love it and my husband secretly sent out my two sons and eldest sons girlfriend (now daughter in law) in search of a stuffed "Hippopotamus"!!! They searched high and low and this is what they came home with. Great job don't you think???!!! He's truly adorable and I make a place for him every year now!!! This year he sits atop the television!! I also wanted to show you some stitched pieces given to me by some very dear friends. They are very special to me!

Some of my most favorite tree ornaments were made by the boys in grammar school. The flower pot bell and grapevine wreath was made by Harrison, the styrofoam snowman was made by Morgan. The boys are now 28 and 21! The brass ice skates were given to Harrison since he played hockey from about age 10 through high school.

This next snowman was made when my oldest son was in pre-school. The tag reads: "Heidi & Peter Pre-K2"!!! He was then known as "Morgan H" as there was also a little girl named "Morgan Lynn" in his class! For the longest time whenever anyone asked what his name was he always said "Morgan H"!!! How cute is that!!!
The wooden wolf ornament below was given to me by Morgan when he was maybe a freshman. The tag says 1996 and it's made of olive wood. Very nice! Then below that is a wonderful stitched piece made by Harrison! I'm not sure how old he was at the time but he had decided he wanted to cross stitch. He obviously was too young to grasp the concept but I saved it none the less! A couple years later I ran across this piece and decided that I wanted to save it forever and thought a Christmas ornament would be just right for it. The neighbor boy even stitched his initials on it! I can still see both little boys sitting on the couch in our basement, needles in hand!
The little "tongue depressor loom" shown below was also a school project Harrison brought home one year! How cute is that!!! If you look closely you can see that he signed his name at the upper side. And, of course, another one of his hockey ornaments!

"Morgan's 1st Christmas" sled ornament was made by a family member and has been on our tree for 28 years now! The little soldier pull toy was also one of his first ornaments.

Several wooden ornaments below were given to Morgan by my mother for his first Christmas. And, of course, the bubble lights which both boys loved!

Now, here's a gift that will surprise most of you! I received this one year from my youngest son Harrison. I think he was 8 or 10 years old at the time. He was always a very mechanical kid. (The neighbor lady came across the street one time to have him start her lawn mower. He was young enough that he wasn't allowed to cross the street by himself!!!!) Anyway, he wanted to learn to weld and after a few instructions from"Dad" this is what he made me! It's a little hard to see in the photo but it says, Love, William, Morgan, Harrison. He cut out hearts, a Christmas Tree and our house. I made the frame and cut-outs out of barn wood from my Granddad's barn. I put some sponged red poster board behind the tin so the cuts would show better.

And, along the bottom it says "Merry Christmas Mom".

Today was my last chance to make my traditional iced sugar cookies that the boys love so much. Anyway, I think they love them!!! I didn't make as many as I usually do but I think there will be plenty. Husband now has diabetes and I don't need them (love 'em, but don't need 'em!) so what doesn't get eaten for Christmas will go home with the boys!

"Last Hours" Do-Able Projects !!!

"Sleeping Beauty-Betsy" !!!

Okay !!! Okay !!! I know I've already fallen behind with this blogging thing!! I'm sooooo sorry, but cut me a little slack, it's a busy time of year !!! I've been trying to figure out what gifts to buy and have been busy stitching, knitting and crocheting. I know this holiday comes around EVERY year, and really, I should start sooner, but, I don't seem to do that, as I'm sure a lot of you are in the same boat. I'm paddling fast so as not to sink !!!

The opening photo is how I usually catch Betsy every morning before our daily trek in to work! She gets up, goes outside, eats her breakfast, gets her insulin, then jumps on the couch to catch a few "ZZZZ's" before we leave for the shop. It takes a lot of energy to bark and growl at everyone!!! I just thought this was such a cute photo of her, she really is the sweetest dog! I wanted to share this photo with you!

I recently finished stitching and framing the top piece shown below in the photo. The pattern is so sweet and the photo on the cover doesn't do it justice (as most photos don't). This chart pack comes with all 3 designs and is done by "Heartstring Primitives". I thought I had my camera here at the shop but I happened to leave it at home this morning. Otherwise you would be seeing a photo of the actual stitched piece. Maybe another time.

As Promised!!! ~ NEW Christmas Designs!

The first Christmas design shown below is called "Christmas Fun" to go along with our "Halloween Fun" released just a bit earlier. These designs are so quick and easy to stitch you're done in no time at all! Stitch the designs all together or stitch them separately and make ornaments. We used Picture This hand-dyed 28 Ct. "Relic" Cashel linen. (Our photo color on the fabric isn't quite what it actually looks like but kinda close! Photos are very tricky!!! We try our best.) The design size of the combined piece is 83 H x 65 W. Each ornament design is approximately 2 1/4" x 2 3/4". We used Weeks Dye Works Wool fabric to back the ornaments. Gentle Art Sampler Threads were used for stitching. We used frame #OLK-HED from East Side Mouldings.

"Christmas Fun"

Next we have an addition to our Celtic Collection, "Celtic Christmas". The stitch count of this design is 170 H x 104 W. We used 30 Ct. R&R "Antique Cotton" linen and The Thread Gatherer "In The Burgundy" silk floss along with Rainbow Gallery PB01 Treasure Braid. The rich Burgundy and metallic gold give this design an extra-festive flair. The framing was done by our wonderful local framer, "Frame Warehouse"!

What Else Is Going On Around Here?

I myself haven't been stitching so much lately. Not sure why, maybe just a little burnt out. I have, on the other hand, been doing a bit of knitting; some fun things for my sweet little granddaughter! Here's a photo of the felted Halloween bag I made for her which turned out REALLY cute!!! (and so soft!!!)

Then, here's a little red sweater I've knitted for the soft little teddy bear she carries around when she's at "Gi-Gi and Poppy's" house. I think I just needed some quick easy projects that I could finish up fast to obtain that sense of "finish" that we all seem to need at times. That instant gratification thing!

However, market in Nashville is in the very near horizon so I have to get "CRACKING"!!! I do have several pieces "in the works", it's just sticking with them that seems to be the problem. Last night I did stitch a while on my largest piece for Nashville debut. It's a companion piece to last years "Song of Solomon" stitched on R&R hand dyed linen and with Crescent Colors Belle Soie silk. OMG, that is the most wonderful thread to work with!!! If you haven't tried it, you MUST!!! I can't show you a photo of this new design since it will not be released until February. Well, maybe just a "teaser"!!!

I have 2 new Christmas designs just about ready for release! I'm expceting photos to be delivered sometime today so, check back VERY, VERY soon as we'll have those posted ASAP!!!

"A Little Bit O' Santa"

I think we'll feature this jolly ole' guy we like to call "Santa"!!!! He really deserves to be in the spotlight at this point in time. We have some great new designs in the shop right now so I wanted to show them off a little. Each and every one are well worth your time to stitch.

This first one is called, "Twelve Days of Christmas" from the designers of Bent Creek. It's packed with such excitement!!! The stocking stitch count is 96 x 145 and the framed piece is 76 x 137. The stocking is done on 18 ct. natural linen and the framed model is done on 32 ct. natural linen.

Next, we have the "newest" addition to the stockings from Shepherd's Bush. "Jeffery's Stocking" is just the cutest!!! In this one the shepherd is minding his sweet little flock. These stockings are stitched on 18 ct. natural linen and the stitch count is 120 x 167.

Next we'll have a little tribute to Santa and his sleigh!!! There's some really great designs out depicting the awesome flight of Santa and those wonderful, faithful reindeer! "Christmas Eve" by Prairie Schooler almost comes alive for us. You can almost hear the sleigh bells as they speed over the roof tops through the icy snowflakes!! This pattern also includes three smaller designs that will work up wonderfully as ornaments! The stitch count for the large piece is 77 x 155 and the ornament size pieces are approximately 35 x 35.

"Christmas Eve"

"Santa Arrives Tonight" is Homespun Elegance's 2009Sampler Ornament. These are so cute hopefully you have collected each and every one of these over the years! If not, let me know and I can order them in to complete your collection. Rudolph is working expecially hard to make it up over that roof top!!! These ornaments stitch up quick and are so fun to do! The stitch count is 44 x 54 and stitched up on 30 ct. linen over 2 threads they are about 3" x 3 1/2" finished.

2009 Sampler Ornament: "Santa Arrives Tonight"

"Jingle All the Way" by Notforgotten Farm is a wonderful primitive design that for some reason brings back my childhood memories of Christmas. I just love this one as I'm sure you will too!!! The stitch count is 140 x 140 and on 28 ct. over 2 threads the design size will be 10" x 10". How great will this one look on some hand dyed linen??? I'll be adding this one to my stash!!!

"Jingle All the Way"

The following two designs come to us from Heaven and Earth Designs. They are incredible heartwarming designs that I wish I had the time to do. The first one showing is "Woodland Santa" and is the sweetest with all the woodland animals greeting Santa for a few minutes of peaceful play. The stitch count is 300 x332. They've suggested stitching over 1 on 25 count fabric but you can do it on any fabric you like. This will just change the finished design size.

Last but not least is "Merry Christmas To All"!!! This is the vision of every child at Christmas time!! It's stitch count is 300 by 375 and finished design size on 25 count over 1 is 12" x 15". Again, do it on whatever you like.

I designed "Thank You For Serving" a couple of years ago to acknowledge my husbands service in the Army during Viet Nam. Times were much different then. Soldiers were not treated well when they returned home. They were not thanked for risking their lives. I wanted to thank him, and others, and let them know I was glad they could come home.

I guess I was so excited to get my first "real" post up and going I made an error on the type of frame that "Halloween Fun" uses. The style is actually "Folke Faire-Blackberry" from East Side Mouldings. Not much difference but if you are wanting to order from your local needlework shop (or us) it does make a difference. Also, all supplies to stitch this design are available from us, "The Sunflower Seed" !

As some of you are already aware, my Christmas ornament "Celtic Wreath" is featured in the "2009 Just Cross Stitch Ornament Issue"! I was extremely excited to see that it made the cover! My 2007 ornament, "A Star, A Star" was also a "cover-shot"!!! This years issue is packed with some really wonderful small projects that you can actually get done for this holiday season! Come by the shop and pick up your very own copy and "get stitch'in"!!!

I think I'm finally ready to get this blog rolling! After much thought about how I never have time to get a "shop newsletter" out (plus how old fashioned is that!!!) this seems to be the answer to the problem. Running the store and designing takes pretty much all of my time but I can work on this a little at a time, when there is such a thing as "spare time"!

We have so many Halloween and Fall designs here in the shop I almost hate to think about Christmas! Fall is my very favorite time of the year with the rich earthy colors, the sounds and smells of leaves blowing and fireplaces burning. Fall is a time to fill our homes with the aromas of stews and chili's, pumpkin bread and cookies. Mmmmmm!!! What can be better. Make yourself a cup of spiced tea and pick up your favorite cross stitch project and stitch those long dark evenings away!

"Halloween Fun" is new for this season. It's quick and easy to stitch and has a whimsey/primitive look to it. It's stitched on the beautiful Picture This "Barnwood" Cashel Linen. We used bright colorful hand dyed thread from Weeks Dye Works to stitch this fun piece. Add the wonderful "Primitive Pearls in Black" frame from East Side Mouldings, set it on an easel and you have a great Halloween decoration for your mantel or side table.
